Incredible ways to raise the bar on your PR: top hacks from 3 experts

PR can often be mystifying to businesses. Do you ever struggle to know how to make it work?

Everyone wants good PR. It's such a good way to raise your visibility and get in front of a bigger audience.

When some clients I’ve spoken to are scaling, they sometimes say they’re stuck and can’t get any bigger. It’s usually because they haven’t previously done the brand awareness and top of funnel marketing activity.

It’s so critical that we focus on more than one marketing channel e.g. not just doing Facebook ads and putting all our eggs in one basket.

There are so many channels and did you know PR is at the TOP of the funnel.

H2: What is the role of PR?

  • PR gets people in: I love Laura’s analogy here:  “PR is like sprinkling the magic dust right at the top of your sales funnelthen your marketing machine kicks in.

  • Drive eyeballs: PR is all about driving eyeballs to...

Learning, purpose, relationships, processes and personal development - the key to a successful scaleup?

In the video above, I am with Anthony Rose founder of SeedLegals an amazing platform that helps startups and investors complete the legal needed to build, grow and fund their business, at a fraction of the cost of using a law firm (you can watch the interview on LinkedIn if you prefer).

We talked about:

How Anthony came up with the idea for Seedlegals and why it's much needed

The problem that Seedlegals solves for both founders and investors

Seedlegal's strategy for acquiring new clients to the platform

How Anthony is helping both investors and founders to get funded faster and more cost-effectively and much more

So many of my clients and connections use SeedLegals (and in fact, I've used it too as an investor) - I'm blown away by how they make everything seem so simple! It was great to partner with them to deliver a Founders networking session in celebration of IWD.

Braincare, The Customer Journey and Walk + Talk Networking

Why we need Braincare

Here I am with Dan Murray-Serter a serial entrepreneur & podcast host. He's the Co-Founder of Braincare company Heights (which recently completed a record-breaking crowdfund) and host of the UK's number 1 business podcast Secret Leaders.

We talked about Braincare and the importance of looking after our brain and Dan shared his story as to how the idea for the business was born.

I've got to be honest that I've never really thought about Braincare that much but after my chat with Dan it's most certainly on my agenda!

I'm now a subscriber to Heights - I've been taking it a couple of weeks, and I'm definitely happy with the way my brain is feeling so far!

This interview was recorded live on LinkedIn - I do that every Thursday at 12 noon. It means I get a chance to chat with founders that have interesting stories and ask them questions that I want to know the answers to - thinking about what might help you too. Follow me if you want to...

Are you loving Clubhouse as much as me?

We might not be able to go clubbing right now but we can get into Clubhouse.

You’ve probably already heard of it because let’s face it, Clubhouse is the talk of the town right now.

If so, do you love it as much as I do?

For those who aren’t familiar Clubhouse is a brand new (invite only) social networking app developed in Silicon Valley that uses audio-chat to connect its users through conversation in various different ‘rooms’.

The Guardian recently described it as "part talkback radio, part conference call, part Houseparty" and it’s a pretty good way to define it. It’s a bit like tuning into a live podcast but with your chance to chip in.

I’ve been absolutely loving it; I’m calling it my new guilty pleasure!

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been hosting rooms on marketing, business, entrepreneurship and growth and I've been invited onto panels with some incredible speakers from all around the world.

I've been totally...

Strategy before tactics and why that really matters

I love Mark Ritson's amazing columns in Marketing Week – a great read for any of you who are serious about marketing and growing your business successfully. In his latest article he breaks down strategy into simple steps:

Diagnosis (I call it audit but it amounts to the same thing)

Strategy – what you will not do

Strategy before tactics – only deciding which tactical levers to use (e.g. Facebook ads, podcast, etc.) once you’re clear on your strategy

I met Mark 'virtually' when I did his Mini MBA in Marketing last year. Having worked in marketing/digital/media for 20 years I've spent my time on the ground doing the work scaling businesses. But despite that, I also wanted to get the trained marketer tick. I’m pleased to say I got it (as well as an A!).

Honestly, it was one of the best things I did. I've now got the confidence when handling my client work to know that I’m not only bringing my unique...

Breaking World Records + SMART goals + Collaboration

It's February - I can't believe January has flown by in a midst of home-schooling, snow, words of the year (mine is Courage) and goal setting. I've seen my first daffodil - Spring is coming.

Inspiration + Guinness World Record + Goals

Talking of goals I have to mention my sister, Kiko, who decided a couple of years ago that she was going to row The Atlantic and break the world record!! Rather a concern given that she had never been in a rowing boat before she made this announcement to her family.

And guess what - she did. And what is even more amazing is that she had life-saving surgery for a pituitary tumour just months before. She told the consultant that they had better get operating pronto as she was NOT going to let that stop her achieve her goal.

We all thought she was crazy to take on such a feat with so little practice. But her mindset was incredible and she smashed her goals, broke the world record and raised £100K for the hospital that saved her life just...

How SMART are your goals?

business growth Jan 26, 2021

Happy New Year!

It feels a little bit weird saying that nearly halfway through January, but it does make me wonder how many people are still sticking to their New Year’s resolutions.

A client of mine looks at a lot of scientific studies as part of their service, and a recent paper they reviewed suggested around 60% of those resolutions will be forgotten by the end of June.

At the time of year where ‘goal setting’ is a common topic of conversation, I want to talk to you about SMART goals.

Thing is, SMART goals aren’t a new concept.

You may well already know what the acronym stands for:

Specific.

Measurable.

Achievable.

Realistic.

Time-bound.

But there’s no denying that, as a way of setting goals, making sure they fit those five criteria dramatically increases your chance of succeeding.

I set some goals using that framework too. One of them was to podcast every day in January.

When I look back, I feel it was achievable.

Until the news of another...

What do your parents think you do?

personal growth Jan 26, 2021

I still don’t think my parents fully understand what I do.

I tried explaining it to them recently as they returned reassuring smiles and gentle nods, but when pressed, I’m fairly sure they’d just say I do “something with the internet”.

They weren’t even that impressed when I told them I was going on Dragons Den. Probably because we grew up without a TV, and neither of them really knew what it was. My Dad often tells me how much he loves reading my testimonials now though.

A few months ago, I spent time looking at the work I was doing with clients to better understand where I was able to provide the most value.

Having run my own marketing agency for the best part of a decade, it didn’t take me long to come up with the answer:

I help service-based entrepreneurs to rapidly increase their revenue and exponentially grow their profits - all while spending less time ‘in’ the business.

My agency experience meant I had real-world...

What most people don’t realise about LinkedIn

digital growth Jan 06, 2021

I’ve got a confession to make...

There was a point where I just really didn’t get the fuss about LinkedIn.

It seemed a bit too ‘corporate’ for me. And let’s be honest, most people were just using it as somewhere to host their CV online.

But it’s in my nature to try and solve problems.

So a while back, I decided to take it seriously, dive in, and deploy the same strategies I’d used in other parts of my life and businesses.

Now I LOVE LinkedIn, and you should too.

First of all, the numbers speak for themselves.

  • The platform now boasts a whopping 500million users - 250million of whom are active every single month.
  • It’s hands down the #1 channel for B2B marketers, with 80% of B2B leads that originate from social media, coming from LinkedIn.

This doesn’t mean you should rule it out if you’re serving B2C. With that user volume, you can still get incredible results if you’ve got an interesting offering.

But here’s...

Ever feel like you’re not good enough?

personal growth Dec 16, 2020

Ever get the feeling that you haven’t got what it takes to run a business?

I know I used to.

I remember sitting down for lunch with one of my friends.

It was last year, so it was an altogether different affair to eating out now.

She had a great job which she loved, and while she didn’t have any desire to run a business, she was always curious as to how I was getting on.

She’d often ask me why I was so harsh on myself when it came to what I’d achieved as an entrepreneur.

And between us, I never had a good answer for her.

I guess, I just always felt like there were others out there who were doing the whole ‘business’ thing better than I was.

All of that despite having spent 20 years in business, building some great brands in the digital, marketing, and tech spaces - and selling businesses along the way too.

Plus successfully raising £200k on Dragon’s Den; although that business ended up failing in the end.

More on that another...
